The 6th Ward

The Chicago Bungalow in Park Manor
The 6th Ward is the proud host of 14 Public elementary schools, 2 public high schools, and 2 catholic elementary schools. There are two Public Libraries and 7 parks within the Ward's boundaries. With the second largest population of Seniors in the entire City it is important to have housing and services to meet their needs. There are 5 Senior housing developments and 2 (soon to be 3) Senior Satellite Centers for our residents. While the area's shopping needs continue to go unmet, the Chatham Crossing Shopping Center is anchored by a Target and Nike Outlet Store. Along the once thriving commercial strips you can still find the Ma and Pa business people and some of the best restaurants in the City.
The 6th Ward is a community of neighborhoods. Starting at our western border a traveler would drive through the historic community of Englewood. A neighborhood of grand Victorian homes, that was hard hit when manufacturing jobs were lost to other Countries, Englewood is in the first stages of a major revitalization. Traveling east across the Dan Ryan, the visitor enters the community of Park Manor. Park Manor was a solidly middle class ownership community since the 1950's. With traditional Chicago styled bungalows and 2-flat owner occupied properties, the early residents remained in their homes and aged in place. Park Manor boasts the oldest African American Association of Block Clubs in the City.

Crossing Cottage Grove, we enter the Grand Crossing Community. The official Community designation for the entire area, including Park Manor is Greater Grand Crossing. Frame and brick homes dot this community that surrounds Grand Crossing Park. At Drexel we would turn around and drive back to King Drive and head south. The community immediately south of Park Manor is Chatham. The oldest continuously Black middle class community in the nation, Chatham is a microcosm of the City's black population. With housing styles ranging from Apartments and bungalows to raised ranches and luxury townhomes, Chatham remains a location of choice for African Americans.
To the South of Chatham you will find the Chesterfield community. Driving through Chesterfield you find another African American middle class community of home owners. Raised ranches, bungalows and Victorians sit side by side in this tight knit community that surrounds Tuley Park. As you past the railroad tracks on 92nd you enter West Chesterfield east of King Drive. Unlike other areas where Blacks moved into homes previously occupied by Whites, West Chesterfield contains many expansive homes that the current residents or their parents built 40 years ago.

As throughout other parts of the Ward, you will find a block of older homes next to a block of raised ranches. Homes outnumber apartments 9 to 1 in this small neighborhood, extending only from 95th to 99th, Michigan to King Drive. The residents here pride themselves in knowing several generations of their neighbors due to its stability. |
| Each year the block clubs plant beautiful gardens on the King Dr. corners in Chesterfield |
